The operative claimChildren's exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) between caregivers is prospectively associated with elevated internalizing and externalizing problems and other adjustment difficulties; the association is robust across many studies and strengthens over time, but it is modest in magnitude, varies widely across children, and operates substantially through co-occurring maltreatment, impaired caregiving, and maternal mental health rather than as a uniform, direct effect of witnessing alone.

Supported by a meta-analysis of 74 longitudinal studies (Vu et al., 2016) and converging meta-analyses on mental disorder (Gardner et al., 2019) and attachment (Noonan et al., 2020). Associations are small-to-moderate, prospective, and strengthen over time; broadly defined IPV (physical plus psychological/sexual) shows stronger associations than physical IPV alone. Outcomes are highly heterogeneous — many exposed children show resilience — and effects are mediated by maternal mental health, parenting, and frequently co-occurring direct child maltreatment.

Effect sizes are small-to-moderate and confounded with co-occurring direct child maltreatment, parental psychopathology, poverty, and genetic transmission; much research relies on shelter samples, single-informant reports, and the Child Behavior Checklist. In at least one community study, IPV exposure was not directly associated with child aggression once maternal mental health and maltreatment were modeled (Holmes, 2013), underscoring that mechanisms are largely indirect.
