Epidemiology and developmental criminology broadly agree that childhood adversity is associated with higher average risk of adolescent antisocial conduct, in a graded dose-response pattern. What is contested — and what the courtroom fight is actually about — is the move from that population association to causation in an individual and to reduced culpability for a particular defendant, not the association itself.
Population-level, probabilistic, graded. The physiological mechanism is disruption of the body's stress-response systems — 'toxic stress': HPA-axis dysregulation and epigenetic embedding (Shonkoff's ecobiodevelopmental framework) — which is how adversity affects development, not a separate risk factor. Shares the underlying scientific rating axes with the criminal-defense adversity claim (same Layer-1 science).

Foundational ACE Study: adverse childhood experiences (abuse, neglect, household dysfunction) are common, cluster together, and show a graded dose-response relationship with later health and behavioral harms — establishing the ACE construct and the cumulative-adversity gradient.

Adversity is correlated with other risk factors (poverty, neighborhood disadvantage, family criminality) that confound simple causal stories; ACE measures are often retrospective and self-reported; and the legally decisive step — reduced culpability for a specific defendant — is a normative inference outside the science. The strength rating reflects the association only.
