Early child-directed language matters for vocabulary, but the famous "30 million word gap" is overstated — not replicated, much smaller when all speech is counted, and swamped by within-group variation.
The association between early child-directed language input and vocabulary is real and moderate, but the headline figure is not. A five-community replication failed to reproduce the 30-million-word gap and showed wide within-SES variation; a meta-analysis of 19 studies found a significant SES difference only when measures were limited to child-directed speech, and no SES difference when all ambient speech was counted. The original estimate rests on 42 families and an extrapolation. Quality and responsiveness of interaction matter, not merely raw word counts.

The original estimate is small-sample and extrapolated; the input-outcome evidence is observational, not causal; effects depend heavily on measurement choices; and the deficit framing can stigmatize low-income families whose language environments are underestimated by narrow measures. The rating is of a modest, measure-dependent association, not the headline gap.
