The operative claimFacilitated communication (FC, "supported typing") is not a valid communication technique: controlled authorship studies unanimously show that FC-generated messages are authored by the facilitator rather than the person with a disability, no new validating evidence has emerged, and every major professional body opposes its use — so statements produced through FC, including abuse allegations, cannot be attributed to the person with the disability.
The scientific and professional consensus is that facilitated communication does not work as claimed: when tested under controlled conditions in which the facilitator cannot know the answer, the "communication" collapses, and message content tracks the facilitator's knowledge, not the user's. Professional bodies uniformly warn against its use; courts since the early 1990s have excluded FC-derived statements absent proof of authorship. A minority perspective urges revisiting FC on presumption-of-competence grounds but has produced no controlled validation.
Applies to facilitated communication and physically-supported typing variants (including rapid prompting method, which shares the mechanism and lacks any controlled validation) used with people with autism or intellectual disabilities. Does not apply to independent typing or to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods where the user selects messages without physical support from another person — many AAC methods are evidence-based.

The validity of FC "stands or falls" on who authors the typed messages. Across the entire experimental literature, results indicated UNEQUIVOCAL evidence for facilitator control: messages generated through FC are authored by the facilitators, not the individuals with disabilities. An "empty review": zero new empirical studies and zero new descriptive quantitative studies addressed authorship; the three new qualitative studies did not first establish authorship; 14 of 15 new commentary papers were critical of FC. There remains no evidence that FC is a valid form of communication, and substantial peer-reviewed literature warns against its use — while FC "continues to be contested in high profile court cases." Controlled message-passing failed to validate FC for ANY participant or facilitator; message analysis revealed a large degree of facilitator influence on content. Critically, FC actively IMPAIRED the performance of the two participants who had previously demonstrated some independent writing skill — evidence that the technique can suppress, not reveal, authentic communication.

Controlled studies are concentrated in the 1990s–2010s and involve modest samples (the phenomenon is so reliable that large trials were never needed, but individual-level claims of independent typing after FC "fading" require case-specific proof). The consensus concerns authorship of facilitated messages; it does not adjudicate every hybrid or transitional method, and genuinely independent typing — once physical support is fully removed and authorship is objectively demonstrated — is a different question. A neurodiversity critique (e.g., Heyworth 2022) argues the testing paradigm is ableist; it has not produced controlled counter-evidence.
