Contested: inclusion is, on average, at least as good as segregated placement and does not harm peers, but whether it causally improves outcomes — and for whom — remains debated given small, observational effects.
Drawn from meta-analyses (Krämer 2021: cognitive d=0.35, psychosocial d=0.00; Dalgaard/Campbell 2022: small, non-significant effects favoring inclusion) and comparative quasi-experimental studies (Cole 2020; Dessemontet 2012). Nearly all studies are non-randomized with serious risk of selection bias; setting quality and individualized support appear to matter more than the placement label.
