The operative claimFor students with disabilities, inclusive placement in general-education settings is associated with academic and access outcomes at least equal to — and for some groups better than — segregated special-education settings, with no consistent harm to social-emotional outcomes or to classmates without disabilities; but the evidence is observational, heterogeneous, and confounded by selection, so effects are small and depend heavily on the quality and support of the setting rather than placement itself.
Contested: inclusion is, on average, at least as good as segregated placement and does not harm peers, but whether it causally improves outcomes — and for whom — remains debated given small, observational effects.
Drawn from meta-analyses (Krämer 2021: cognitive d=0.35, psychosocial d=0.00; Dalgaard/Campbell 2022: small, non-significant effects favoring inclusion) and comparative quasi-experimental studies (Cole 2020; Dessemontet 2012). Nearly all studies are non-randomized with serious risk of selection bias; setting quality and individualized support appear to matter more than the placement label.

Students with general learning difficulties showed a small-to-medium cognitive benefit in inclusive versus segregated settings (d=0.35) and no psychosocial effect (d=0.00); peers without difficulties were unaffected.

Observational
Students with disabilities who spent 80% or more of their time in general-education inclusive classrooms did significantly better in reading and math than peers in more separate settings.
