The operative claimChildren placed with kin (relatives) in foster care generally show greater placement stability and fewer behavioral and mental-health problems than children in non-relative foster care; but much of the behavioral advantage reflects selection, and rigorous designs that adjust for it find the stability benefit more robust than the behavioral and academic benefits, which are mixed.
