Established that later starts increase adolescent sleep and improve some outcomes; debate is about academic magnitude and trade-offs.
Supported by a large meta-analysis (28 studies, ~1.77M participants; Yip et al., 2022), a systematic review of experimental evidence showing 25-77 extra minutes of sleep per night (Minges & Redeker, 2015), and objective-actigraphy and difference-in-differences studies showing durable sleep gains and modest improvements in tardiness, behavior referrals, and GPA (Widome et al., 2020; James et al., 2023). A Campbell systematic review rated the academic body of evidence "very low" quality and flagged possible adverse effects (Marx et al., 2017).

Later school start times were associated with better overall developmental outcomes, longer sleep duration, and less negative mood; starts of 8:30-8:59 were associated with better outcomes than 8:00-8:29.
