The operative claimParental incarceration is associated with worse child outcomes — particularly antisocial behavior and, into young adulthood, anxiety, substance-use disorder, and reduced educational attainment — but the most rigorous studies, which control for pre-existing antisocial behavior and shared genetic/family confounding, find the independent effect is smaller and uneven across domains; paternal-incarceration effects are better supported than maternal, and much of the raw association reflects selection.

Built on a meta-analysis finding elevated antisocial behavior (OR ~1.4) but NOT mental health, drug use, or education once pre-existing antisocial behavior is controlled (Murray et al., 2012), a community cohort showing residual young-adult effects after adjustment (Gifford et al., 2019), and reviews emphasizing paternal>maternal evidence and context-moderation (Wildeman et al., 2018; Poehlmann-Tynan & Turney, 2020). A children-of-siblings register study (>1M people) shows associations are at least partly genetic (Jarvinen et al., 2024).

After accounting for childhood psychiatric diagnoses and adversity, parental incarceration remained associated with adult anxiety disorder, illicit-drug-use disorder, felony charge, not completing high school, and social isolation.
