Contested. Content, context, and co-use — not total screen time — drive associations, most of which are small, correlational, and confounded.
Meta-analyses show screen-time quantity associates modestly with lower language (r ~-.14) but educational content and co-viewing associate positively (Madigan et al., 2020); a 100-study synthesis finds context (program type, co-use, caregiver use) drives associations (Mallawaarachchi et al., 2024); and a vocabulary meta-analysis finds NO association for naturalistic exposure except educational media (Jing et al., 2023). Longitudinal data show small negative associations that attenuate after adjusting for family background (Gath et al., 2025); effects are age- and content-dependent (Anderson & Subrahmanyam, 2017).

Most evidence is correlational and confounded by family background, which attenuates associations; "screen time" aggregates very different activities; and under-2 effects differ from preschool effects.

Effects depend on child age, program type, and viewing context: for children under 2, TV viewing has mostly negative associations (esp. language/executive function), while educational programming and some computer games have positive effects for preschoolers and older children.
