Supported by the National Reading Panel meta-analysis (Ehri 2001, d=0.41) and an RCT-only meta-analysis (Galuschka 2014) in which phonics was the sole statistically confirmed approach, plus primary-grade intervention meta-analyses (Gersten 2020; Wanzek 2018). Effects are largest on code-based skills and smaller and less durable on comprehension; one systematic review (Bowers 2018) disputes phonics' superiority over alternatives.
