Most adopted children develop within the normal range, but as a group adoptees show a modestly elevated risk of emotional, behavioral, and mental-health difficulties relative to non-adopted peers in intact biological families; risk rises with later age at placement and pre-adoption adversity, and adoption itself is a strongly beneficial intervention relative to remaining institutionalized.
