Refundable income transfers to working families — exemplified by the Earned Income Tax Credit — causally improve children's outcomes: quasi-experimental studies using EITC expansions find higher math and reading achievement, better infant health (higher birth weight, less low birth weight), and improved later health, with larger effects for the most disadvantaged families and for Black mothers.
