The operative claimPsychopathy and callous-unemotional designations applied to adolescents carry moderate group-level predictive validity for offending (meta-analytic r ≈ .24, with some incremental value beyond antisocial history), but their stability into adulthood is genuinely contested — traits decline on average and roughly a third of high-scoring institutionalized youth show substantial decreases over ten years, while serious-offender cohorts show majority rank-order stability — so an adolescent "psychopath" label cannot be treated as a finding of fixed adult character in sentencing or disposition.
Developmental forensic psychology holds two positions at once: adolescent psychopathy/CU measures are informative — moderately predicting offending and adding value beyond antisocial history — and adolescence is the wrong developmental window in which to pronounce fixed character, because trait levels decline on average into adulthood and a meaningful minority of the highest scorers substantially desist from the trait profile itself. The unresolved question, visible in dueling longitudinal studies, is how much stability to expect for whom; what is not disputed is that the label outruns the evidence when used as proof of permanent adult character.

Over a 10-year interval, psychopathic traits DECLINED significantly at the group level across all three dimensions (grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, impulsive-irresponsible), and by the Reliable Change Index roughly ONE-THIRD of the formerly high-risk adolescents showed a substantial decrease in psychopathic trait symptoms. The authors conclude long-term stability of self-reported psychopathic traits is LOWER than previously assumed from shorter follow-ups — direct longitudinal evidence against treating adolescent psychopathy designations as fixed.

Psychopathic traits in juveniles were moderately and positively associated with current and future delinquent behavior (r = .24) — establishing that the construct carries real group-level predictive signal, while the moderate magnitude means most of the variance in juvenile offending lies elsewhere. CONFLICTING (on malleability): identifying developmental pathways for psychopathic traits and their dimensions across the adolescence-to-adulthood transition, the MAJORITY of adolescents showed stability in their psychopathic traits into early adulthood, with only a small proportion changing — read by the authors as support for early identification of youth psychopathy. The counter-pole to the long-term decline findings: over shorter horizons and in serious-offender samples, rank-order stability predominates.

Stability estimates depend heavily on instrument (self-report YPI vs clinician-rated PCL:YV), informant, follow-up length, and sample severity — the two key longitudinal studies differ on several of these at once, so the conflict is partly methodological; attrition in decade-long follow-ups may bias toward desisters; and the meta-analytic association pools heterogeneous designs. Individual-level prediction from any of these instruments remains far too imprecise for character findings.

Adolescent callous-unemotional traits predicted a range of adult antisocial and social outcomes, and retained INCREMENTAL predictive value for several (more arrests, greater aggression, lower-quality relationships) even after controlling for the level and trajectory of antisocial behavior itself — though several associations dropped to non-significance once antisocial behavior was controlled. Establishes both the clinical utility and the modest bounds of the construct's forecasting power.
